Manitobans are plugged into a huge northern hydropower system. Our TV’s, toasters and indeed our daily lives depend on the electricity produced by remote dams. But at the far end of the transmission lines lies a reality few of us ever see. This unit of study attempts to remedy that. Through Gallery Walks, Documentaries, Research, and Role-Playing, students will learn about the reality at the power-production end of the electrical system, and they will critically analyse the claim that hydropower is ‘clean’ energy.
On Friday, October 25, Ellen Cook and Derek Eidse presented/released this curriculum document at the annual gathering of the Manitoba Social Studies Teachers’ Association. Printed copies of the curriculum can be ordered by emailing hydrojustice@gmail.com or PDFs can be downloaded on our Curriculum Page.
The session at MTS PD was wonderful. Best session I have attended in a long time!
